Robert Louis Stevenson

1850 - 1894
Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (RLS) was one of the great Edinburgh writers. His most famous works of fiction include:

 • Treasure Island
 • Kidnapped
 • Jekyll and Hyde
 • The Body Snatcher

Stevenson also wrote the Picturesque Notes, an Edinburgh travelogue. He died in Samoa where he spent the last years of his life with his wife Fanny.

A memorial plaque to Stevenson is on the wall of St Giles Cathedral. The plaque shows him holding a pen - this is actually a bit of politically correct tidying up. The original design, a copy of which can be seen in the Writers' Museum, had him holding a cigarette!
